Maxim MAX86150 integrates PPG and ECG biosensor modules for mobile devices

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2022-11-06, Maxim Integrated

The MAX86150 of Maxim Integrated can provide measurement data of pleurogram (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) through mobile battery powered equipment for health monitoring. The MAX86,150 is a biosensor module, which consists of an internal LED, a photodetector and an ECG analog front-end (AFE). It provides highly accurate, fda certified PPG and ECG performance. In a compact power saving design, it includes mobile phones, laptops, tablets and smart speakers.

Realizing synchronous PPG and ECG measurement has always been a challenge, because designers have to use two separate biosensors, which together consume more board space and power than mobile devices can usually afford. In addition, achieving high measurement accuracy is challenging, especially when low perfusion levels or dry skin may affect sensor sensitivity. The MAX86150 overcomes these challenges and simultaneously samples PPG and ECG to provide pulse transmission time with the highest sensitivity. The module can be turned off by software when the standby current is close to zero, which can reduce the battery loss, but allows the power rail to maintain power supply at all times. The MAX86150 features a 3.3 mm x 6.6 mm x 1.3 mm 22 pin optical module.
